The gold leaf prime meats sign has tugged at me for at least nine months. Yes, because they don’t do signs in gold leaf anymore and I can’t imagine how far back we’d have to go to find a butcher at this spot. But also, I’m sure you’ve noticed, we haven’t had a butcher in the neighborhood since Berkeley Meat Market closed. You have to go to Windsor Terrace for a butcher.
It used to be that I longed for Astoria because of sausage casings; but now much more mainstream meats are enough to make you whimsical.
