A quick survey of the Paris Métro map indicates that the most sprawling conglomerate of Métro and commuter rail stations surrounds the Gare St. Lazare. The transfer tunnels make it possible to walk underground from St. Augustin to Opéra, a distance of 1.2 miles as the crow flies. I did it so you don’t have to. Here’s a record of the journey in 25 photos.

I must say… the Paris Metro looks very lonely unlike the sometimes overly crowded NY subways…

I was there long after rush hour.

You can really find yourself walking for what seems like an age in there…especially around the main Montparnasse station. Great idea to find the longest underground walk..and great photos.

Thanks, Lup! Yes, I think they really should warn you when your transfer is going to require a stop for refreshments halfway through.

Excellent idea! Next time I take BART from Oakland to San Francisco I’ll bring my camera along. I did something like that a couple of years ago. See http://www.rchrd.com/Gallery/d1/index.html. Now, who could show us the London Underground (when not on strike)?
