9.11 and after

Oct. 5
South from Chambers Street in lower Manhattan.

I went to a restaurant in Tribeca with my girlfriend. We figured that the neighborhood could use some business. The street out front was full of Red Cross trucks and emergency supplies. The smoky smell from the ruins was still strong, and the restaurant was almost empty. As we were eating the manager announced to the staff, "The phones work! The phones work!"

Looking across the police barricades, it seemed strange that such a sad and ruined place should be the brightest spot in the city.
