9.11 and after

Sept. 11, 10:17 a.m.
From my roof in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The darker smoke was coming off the second tower, which had yet to fall. I didn't know this when I took the photo. At this point I didn't know much at all, except that a plane or two planes had hit the World Trade Center and there was a wall of smoke across a good portion of the sky. A few people stood on top of the buildings around mine, talking on cell phones, shaking their heads. It seemed clear that many people would have been killed, but this was not an easy thing to think about. How could such a thing happen within sight of my home?
